Director message

Dr. Robert KajobeIt is my great pleasure to welcome you to Rwebitaba Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Rwebitaba ZARDI) website.

Rwebitaba ZARDI as one of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) institutes was started in July 2011. Before that, Rwebitaba Tea Research Centre was under the National Crop Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) based at Namulonge. The instituteis located in the Western highland agro-ecological zone (Rwenzori region).

Administratively, the institute covers 7 districts namely Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Kabarole, Kamwenge, Kasese, Ntoroko andBundibugyo. This region has a high of potential for agricultural production and productivity.Rwebitaba ZARDI has two research stations. One is Rwebitaba Tea Research Centre, located in Kyenjojo District. The other is Kyembogo research station located in Kabarole district.

Rwebitaba station, located in Kyenjojo District is only specialised in tea research. The station has 69 ha of land, 278 tea clones and a field gene bank. Research in the agricultural commodities is undertaken in Kyembogo station. These commodities include bananas, cassava, maize, rice, potatoes and beans. Others commodities are Agroforestry, Livestock, Aquaculture and Apiculture. The station has a total land area of 200 ha.

The mandate of Rwebitaba ZARDI is to conduct and manage applied and adaptive agricultural research and facilitate the development and dissemination of appropriate technologies that address specific needs of the Western Highlands Agro-ecological zone. The institute has four research programmes. namely;Tea Research and Development Program, Crops and Natural Resources Management Development Program, Livestock and Fisheries Research and Development Program and Livelihood and Farming Systems Research Program.

Rwebitaba ZARDI is keen to involve all stakeholders in its research programmes. Uganda’s researchprogrammes will not be sustainable without the strong support of a broad coalition of stakeholders. Without the support of stakeholders, adequate funding will not be forthcoming, institutional reforms will not be undertaken, and the efficiency and effectiveness of agriculture generation and adoption will not increase. Agricultural development often fails because the stakeholders are not given enoughconsideration. Each stakeholder has a different interest in the situation.

At Rwebitaba ZARDI, we are aware that our clients are drawn from all over the world. We are committed to keeping you fully briefed on what is happening in our institute. Although we are proud of our products, services, and technology, nothing matches the pride we have in our staff. We are now in the business of building relationships. For that reason, we put a premium on hiring only the most qualified individuals to serve on our team.Every person on our staff is committed to providing excellent service. As you work with us in the future, we are confident that you will find this to be true. Please feel free to request for information in any research area through our contact page.
